Calix GigaPoint ONT Guide: GP1100X, GP1101X, GP4200 Series, GigaPro and Legacy ONTs

Calix GigaPoint ONT mounted on a wall with a fiber drop cable

A Calix GigaPoint ONT is the device that turns a fiber drop into Ethernet and phone service at the subscriber end. Calix sells GigaPoint units for GPON, XGS-PON and Active Ethernet, in indoor and outdoor versions. So picking the right model comes down to a few clear choices.

This guide compares the GigaPoint models we supply, as well as the GigaPro business appliance and older 700GE and 800G ONTs. Silverback supplies new and used Calix ONTs, tested before they ship.

Calix GigaPoint ONT or ONU: what the terms mean

Calix uses both terms across the GigaPoint line. In general, the compact single port units carry the ONU name, while units with more ports are called ONTs. Either way, every Calix GigaPoint ONT does the same core job. In short, it terminates the PON and then hands off service to the home or business.

Calix lists the full GigaPoint range, including models we do not cover here, on its official website. However, this guide sticks to the part numbers Silverback supplies.

How to choose a Calix GigaPoint ONT

Four questions narrow the choice quickly. Answer them in order, because the first one rules out half the range.

GPON or XGS-PON

First of all, a Calix GigaPoint ONT must match the OLT port. GPON models such as the GP1100G, 100-05805, run at 2.5 Gbps. XGS-PON models such as the GP1100X, 100-05463, run at 10 Gbps. Meanwhile, the GP4200A, 100-05882, supports both GPON and 1 Gbps Active Ethernet.

2.5GE or 10GE port

A 10 Gbps PON only helps when the LAN port can pass the speed. For example, the GP1100X has a 2.5GE port, while the GP1101X has a 10GE port. So choose the GP1101X when the subscriber router can take 10GE.

Voice lines

The single port ONUs have one voice line, while the four port GP4200 series models have two. Therefore, count the phone lines each site needs before you order.

Indoor or outdoor Calix GigaPoint ONT

Outdoor models carry an H at the end of the name, such as the GP4200XH, 100-05589, and the GP4201XH, 100-05884. They mount outside the building, while indoor models sit near the router.

Calix GigaPoint ONT models compared

Every current Calix GigaPoint ONT in this guide falls into one of two groups. So the main differences come down to speed, port count and housing.

Single port ONUs

The single port ONUs suit homes with one router. The GP1100G is the GPON choice, and it ships with an AC adapter. Meanwhile, the GP1100X and GP1101X are the XGS-PON choices, and each one also has a single voice line.

Four port ONTs

The four port models suit homes and small offices that need more wired drops. Both the GP4200A and the GP4201X, 100-05880, sit indoors, with three GE ports beside the main port. Similarly, the GP4200XH and GP4201XH offer the same port layouts in outdoor housings.

One model, two part numbers

The GP1101X is sold under two part numbers, 100-05857 and 100-05638. In other words, both are the same indoor XGS-PON ONU. So if your records show either number, you can order the other with confidence.

GigaPro for business and multi-tenant sites

The GigaPro GPR8802x, 100-05774, is built for businesses and apartment buildings. In fact, Calix describes it as an XGS-PON ONT, an L2 switch and a voice platform in one box. It has a 10G SFP+ cage and eight POTS lines, so one unit can serve a small office or a floor of tenants.

Legacy 700GE and 800G ONTs

Many networks still run older Calix ONTs, and spares keep those subscribers online. The 711GE, 100-05159, is a GPON ONT with two GE ports and two POTS lines. Similarly, the 717GE, 100-05162, has four GE ports and four POTS lines. In addition, the GigaPoint 803G, 100-04255, is a compact ONT with one GE port and one POTS line.

Overall, these older units suit like for like swaps. However, for new installs, the current GigaPoint models offer more speed and more port choice.

New vs used Calix GigaPoint ONT units

A new Calix GigaPoint ONT makes sense for large rollouts and fresh builds. Still, used units cost less and work well for repairs, small expansions and like for like swaps. Either way, Silverback tests every unit before it ships, and you can ask for new or used condition on each line.

ONTs can also hold subscriber settings. So when you retire them, Silverback buys back retired gear and offers certified data destruction backed by R2v3, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. See how IT buyback value works for bulk lots.

Matching ONTs to optics and Wi-Fi

Of course, a Calix GigaPoint ONT is only one part of the subscriber kit. For example, the OLT side needs the right optic class, and the home needs a router that can use the speed. Our guide to OLT and ONT optics covers the first part, while the GigaSpire and GigaHub guide covers the second.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are 100-05857 and 100-05638 the same ONT?

Yes. Both part numbers are the GP1101X, an indoor XGS-PON ONU with one 10GE port and one voice line.

Can an XGS-PON ONT work on a GPON port?

No. The ONT must match the OLT port. A Multi-PON optic on the OLT can serve both GPON and XGS-PON ONTs from one port.

Which GigaPoint models are outdoor units?

The models with an H at the end, such as the GP4200XH and GP4201XH, are outdoor units.

Do you supply older 700GE ONTs?

Yes. Silverback supplies 711GE and 717GE ONTs, as well as the 803G, tested before they ship.
