Adtran TA5000 Modules: OLT Cards, Combo PON Optics and Switch Modules

Adtran TA5000 modules in a fiber access shelf

Adtran TA5000 modules turn a Total Access 5000 shelf into a working fiber access node. The OLT cards serve the PON, while the switch modules carry traffic upstream and the Ethernet line modules hand off services.

This guide explains which cards work together and how to move from GPON to XGS-PON. It also covers 10G and 100G uplinks, plus every part number in this family that Silverback supplies.

How Adtran TA5000 modules fit together

In short, the TA5000 is a chassis platform with a pure Ethernet core. So every subscriber card depends on a switch module for its uplink. When you plan a build, think in three layers: access cards, switch modules and optics.

Access cards such as the 1187503F2 8-port GPON OLT face the subscribers. Switch modules such as the 1187041F1 SM40 then gather that traffic. Finally, optics such as the 1442543F2 Combo PON SFP+ decide which PON standard each port runs.

Adtran TA5000 modules for GPON and XGS-PON

Most shelves in service today run GPON, while new builds lean toward XGS-PON. The TA5000 can run both, so you can upgrade one card at a time.

1187503F2 second generation GPON OLT

The 1187503F2 is the Total Access 5000 8-Port OLT, 2nd Generation. Adtran's datasheet calls it the TA5000 2nd Gen GPON Octal OLT. So it suits shelves that run GPON only and need more OLT ports or tested spares.

1187518F1 10G Combo PON OLT

The 1187518F1 is an 8-port access module that runs GPON, XGS-PON or both. However, the mode depends on the PON optics you fit in each port. As a result, one card can serve your current GPON ONTs while you add XGS-PON customers. In addition, each interface supports up to 128 ONTs.

1442543F2 Combo PON optic

The 1442543F2 is an SFP+ Combo PON Class D2 optic. It also carries both GPON and XGS-PON wavelengths in one module, with an SC connector on single mode fiber. In fact, Adtran bundles eight of these optics with the 1187518F1 under bundle number 4187518F32.

The switch module sets how much traffic the whole shelf can move upstream. So it deserves as much attention as the OLT cards.

SM40 and SM200 for the TA5000

The SM40 4x10GE switch module comes as 1187040F1 and 1187041F1. Both also give you four SFP/SFP+ ports. In addition, the 1187041F1 ports can run at 1GE, 2.5GE or 10GE, with simplex or redundant operation.

When 10G uplinks are no longer enough, the 1187045F1 SM200 adds two 40GE QSFP+ and two 100GE QSFP28 uplinks. It works in deployed TA5000 systems. However, it needs an SMIO4.

MSM20 for the compact TA5004

The 1187016F1 MSM20 is the switch module for the smaller Total Access 5004. It also offers two front panel SFP+ ports that run at 1G or 10G. Because it works with existing 5004 access and line modules, you can upgrade the uplink without swapping cards.

Earlier switch module 1187025G1

Older shelves often run the 1187025G1, a switch module with two 10G and two 1G ports and no ring generator. It remains a common spare when an operator wants to match the installed base.

Adtran TA5000 Ethernet line modules and transport

Not every slot on a TA5000 serves PON. The 1187550G2 Gigabit Ethernet line module gives you four 1GE SFP ports, while the 1187552G1 offers eight GE ports. For example, operators use them for business Ethernet, backhaul and hand-offs to other gear.

For metro transport, the 1174130F2 ETOS-10 comes from the TA5000 Optical Networking Edge line. It gathers 1GE and 10GE services onto fiber uplinks with SFP+ or DWDM interfaces. It also supports G.8032 ring protection.

Upgrading Adtran TA5000 modules to XGS-PON

First, check your switch module. A Combo PON card can push far more traffic than an older 2x10G switch module can carry. So many operators move to an SM40 or SM200 before they add Combo PON cards.

Then add or swap the OLT cards. Because the 1187518F1 runs both standards, GPON subscribers can stay on the same port while you add XGS-PON ONTs. After that, order a matching Combo PON optic for each port that needs XGS-PON.

Also confirm that your system software supports each new card before you install it. That way, the new module comes up cleanly on the first try.

Common mistakes when buying Adtran TA5000 modules

The most common mistake is ordering the right card with the wrong optic. For example, a GPON-only optic will not run XGS-PON, even in a Combo PON card. Another mistake is forgetting the SMIO4 that the SM200 needs, especially on upgrades.

Buyers also mix up the 1187040F1 and the 1187041F1. Both are SM40 4x10GE modules, so match the exact part number to your shelf records. When in doubt, send us the label details and we will confirm the fit.

New or used Adtran TA5000 modules

Of course, new Combo PON cards make sense for fresh XGS-PON builds. However, used Adtran TA5000 modules are a smart choice for spares, expansions and older GPON shelves. Silverback supplies new and used cards, tested before they ship, so ask for new or used condition on each line.

Retiring older cards after an upgrade? Then Silverback can buy them back and pay fair value for working units. Read how IT buyback value works to see what drives the price. For datasheets and product news, visit Adtran's official site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 1187518F1 run GPON and XGS-PON at the same time?

Yes. The 10G Combo PON OLT runs GPON, XGS-PON or both on each port, based on the optics you fit, with up to 128 ONTs per interface.

Which optic goes with the 1187518F1?

Adtran pairs it with the 1442543F2 Combo PON Class D2 SFP+, which carries both GPON and XGS-PON wavelengths. Adtran also sells the pair as bundle 4187518F32.

What does the SM200 need to work?

The 1187045F1 SM200 works in deployed TA5000 systems, but it requires an SMIO4. Plan for it in the same order.
