Ciena 6500 OTN cards connect your client services to the optical network, whether you carry 10G, 40G or 100G traffic. So when an older 6500 shelf loses a card, these are often the parts buyers need first.
This guide shows how each card maps to its ports, such as XFP, SFP, QSFP28 and CFP2. It also covers common mistakes, new vs used condition and every part number Silverback supplies in this family.
What Ciena 6500 OTN cards do
On the 6500, client cards sit between your routers and the coherent line, so they shape every service. They take in Ethernet, SONET or OTN signals and then map them into OTN containers for transport. As a result, the client card decides which services and port types a slot can handle.
Coherent WaveLogic cards then carry that traffic across the fiber. So most sites need both types, and our guide to 6500 WaveLogic line cards covers the coherent side.
The 6500 started out as the Nortel OME 6500 before Ciena bought Nortel's optical networking and Carrier Ethernet business. That deal closed in 2010, so these cards still carry NTK codes even though Ciena sells and supports them today.
Ciena 6500 OTN cards by port type
When you pick a card, start with the optics your service needs. Since each card supports a set mix of ports, the port list often settles the choice.
10G cards with XFP and SFP ports
The NTK530QM is a quad 10G transponder, or 4x10G OTR, with 8 XFP ports. So it suits older 10G wavelength services where XFP optics are already in place.
Meanwhile, the NTK532DA is an OTN Flex MOTR with 1 XFP port and 8 SFP ports. Resellers also list it as a line card for 6500 D and S series shelves. As a result, it works well when you gather several lower-rate services onto one 10G uplink.
High-density Ciena OTN Flex cards
The NTK532GA is an OTN Flex MOTR with 2 CFP2, 20 SFP+ and 16 SFP client ports. The NTK532GN follows the same layout, but it uses two QSFP28 ports instead of the two CFP2 ports. In other words, the GA and GN differ mainly in their 100G optics.
Because they mix 1G, 10G and 100G ports, these cards suit busy sites with many service types.
100G OCI and packet interface cards
The NTK529AC is a 100G optical channel interface, or OCI, with a single CFP client port. It handles multi-protocol 100G services, and resellers also list it as a 6500 D and S series card.
Similarly, the NTK668AB is a packet and OTN interface card with one 100G CFP2 port and two 40G QSFP+ ports. So it fits sites that still run 40G services next to newer 100G links.
How to choose Ciena 6500 OTN cards
First of all, list the client services the slot must carry, with their rates. Then match them against the ports on each card. Finally, check the shelf type and the coherent card that the client card will feed.
- For 10G XFP services, look at the NTK530QM as well as the NTK532DA.
- When services mix 1G, 10G and 100G, compare the NTK532GA and NTK532GN.
- If you need one 100G CFP client, the NTK529AC fits.
- When 40G QSFP+ runs next to 100G CFP2, choose the NTK668AB.
Also order the optics with the cards, and use our Ciena pluggable optics guide to find matching 160-series codes.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common mistake is mixing up CFP and CFP2, because the names look so alike. For example, the NTK529AC uses a CFP port, while the NTK532GA and NTK668AB use CFP2. Since the two form factors differ in size, an optic for one will not fit the other.
Also, don't treat the NTK532GA and NTK532GN as the same card, since their 100G ports differ. So check the optics you already own before you choose.

New vs used Ciena 6500 client cards
Used cards are a smart choice when you keep an existing 6500 network running. In fact, many operators only need a few spares to cover failures, not a new shelf. Since Silverback tests every card before it ships, a used spare is ready to install.
Meanwhile, new cards make sense for long service plans or a fresh build. So ask for both conditions on one quote and compare them side by side.
Why buy Ciena 6500 OTN cards from Silverback
When you retire 10G or 40G services, the old cards can still return value. Silverback buys back retired Ciena gear and also offers certified data destruction for any storage in the same project.
Silverback supplies new and used Ciena 6500 OTN cards, tested before they ship. You can also browse the equipment inventory or start with our overview of Ciena hardware. Ciena also posts its platform news at ciena.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the NTK532GA and NTK532GN?
Both are OTN Flex MOTR cards with 20 SFP+ and 16 SFP client ports. However, the NTK532GA has 2 CFP2 ports, while the NTK532GN has 2 QSFP28 ports instead.
Which 6500 card supports 40G QSFP+ clients?
The NTK668AB packet and OTN interface card has two 40G QSFP+ ports as well as one 100G CFP2 port.
Does a CFP optic fit a CFP2 port?
No, because CFP and CFP2 are different form factors. For example, the NTK529AC uses CFP, while the NTK532GA and NTK668AB use CFP2.
Why do these cards use NTK codes?
The 6500 began as the Nortel OME 6500. Ciena bought Nortel's optical networking business in a deal that closed in 2010, so the NTK codes stayed.
Can I order new and used cards on one quote?
Yes. Send the part numbers with quantities, and we then quote new and used condition side by side.
