Adtran DSL Equipment: Outside Plant DSLAMs, SHDSL Units and Legacy Spares

Adtran DSL equipment in an outside plant cabinet

Adtran DSL equipment still delivers broadband and business circuits over copper in many networks. When an outside plant node or a central office card fails, the quickest fix is a tested spare with the same part number.

This guide covers outside plant DSLAMs, SHDSL and HDSL units and OPTI-6100 spares. It also lists every part number in this family that Silverback supplies.

Where Adtran DSL equipment still runs

Copper is not gone yet. Many operators run vectored VDSL2 from cabinets near the customer while they build fiber elsewhere. So the Total Access 1100 and 1148 series, as well as older HDSL cards, still need spares.

Business circuits also keep copper alive. For example, SHDSL and HDSL2 units still carry Ethernet and T1 service to sites that fiber has not reached. As long as those customers pay for service, the gear behind them needs support.

In short, Adtran DSL equipment will stay in many networks for years. A good spares plan keeps it reliable until the fiber build reaches every site.

Total Access 1148 outside plant DSLAMs

The TA 1148 family puts DSL access in sealed cabinets close to the subscriber. Because these units live outdoors, failures tend to need a fast swap.

TA 1148 VXP model

The TA 1148 VXP is a model, and we list it under 1148VXP. It is a sealed outside plant node with 48 vectored VDSL2 ports and built-in POTS. The ANSI version comes as a host unit, 1179916F1, and a client unit, 1179918F1. So check which one you need before you order.

TA 1148V host unit

The 1179732G1 is the Total Access 1148V VDSL2 OSP DSLAM host unit. It serves VDSL2 subscribers from an outside plant location. When you replace a host, match the exact part number so the site design stays the same.

SHDSL and HDSL units for business circuits

The 1172657G1 is the Total Access 1448S-CE ANSI SHDSL EFM LTU/NTU. It delivers carrier Ethernet over SHDSL copper pairs. As the LTU/NTU name shows, it works at either end of the link.

The 1223007L9 is an H2TU-C module, which is the HDSL2 T1 central office unit. Shelf fit can vary, so tell us your shelf model and we will confirm before you order.

OPTI-6100 spares

The OPTI-6100 is an Adtran optical multiplexer that still carries TDM traffic in some networks. The 1184508L2 EFANM fan module is a common replacement part, because fans wear out long before the shelf does. Since the OPTI-6100 often shares an office with copper gear, many buyers order its spares together with their DSL parts.

Also check the rest of the shelf when you replace a fan. A tired fan often points to dust or heat that affects the cards as well.

How to source Adtran DSL equipment spares

First, record the part number, CLEI and revision of each unit in the field. Then group sites by model, so one spare can cover several cabinets.

After that, keep spares for the parts that take a site down. For example, an outside plant host or a fan module deserves a spare before a less critical card does.

Finally, test spares before you need them. Silverback tests every unit before it ships, so the spare in your truck works when you arrive on site.

Common mistakes with Adtran DSL equipment orders

The most common mistake is ordering a TA 1148 VXP without saying host or client. The model name covers both, so give us the exact role of the unit you need to replace.

Another mistake is ordering by description instead of by part number. Many Adtran DSL units share similar names, yet they fit different shelves or cabinets. For example, an H2TU-C card must match the shelf it goes into, so send the shelf model with your request.

Finally, some buyers wait until a cabinet fails before they look for spares. Instead, build a small spares pool while the network still runs well. That way, a failure turns into a quick swap rather than a long outage.

New or used Adtran DSL equipment

Most of this family is legacy gear, so used Adtran DSL equipment is often the most practical choice. Silverback supplies new and used units, tested before they ship. Ask for new or used condition on each line of your quote.

When you finally retire copper gear, Silverback buys it back and offers certified ITAD under R2v3, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Read our guide to a sustainable IT asset lifecycle for planning tips, or visit Adtran's official site for current product news.
