The Cisco Catalyst 9200 family is the access switch line for wiring closets, branch offices and small campuses. It also replaces the Catalyst 2960-X, which reached end of sale in 2022.
This guide compares the 9200, 9200L and 9200CX models, so you can pick the right one. In addition, it covers PoE budgets, uplink modules, power supplies and stacking.
What the Cisco Catalyst 9200 family includes
There are three branches in the family. The Catalyst 9200 has a modular uplink slot, while the 9200L has fixed uplinks. Meanwhile, the 9200CX is a compact switch for spaces where a full size switch will not fit.
Catalyst 9200 with modular uplinks
Models such as the C9200-24P-E and C9200-48P-E have PoE+ on every port. However, you choose the uplink module separately. For example, the C9200-NM-4X adds four 1G/10G ports, so you can start at 1G and move to 10G later.
Catalyst 9200L with fixed uplinks
The 9200L keeps costs down because its uplinks are built in. For example, the C9200L-48P-4G-E has four 1G uplinks, while the C9200L-48P-4X-E has four 10G uplinks. So pick the uplink speed on day one, since you cannot swap it later.
Catalyst 9200CX compact switches
The C9200CX-12P-2X2G-E and C9200CX-8P-2X2G-E give you 12 or 8 PoE+ ports. Both also include two 1G copper and two 10G SFP+ uplinks. Still, they have a 240W PoE budget and no second power supply option.
Cisco Catalyst 9200 PoE budgets compared
PoE budget decides how many phones, cameras and access points one switch can power. On 24-port PoE+ models, you get 370W with one power supply, or 740W when you add a second. Similarly, 48-port PoE+ models give 740W with one supply and 1440W with two.
If you only need data ports, the C9200L-24T-4G-E has no PoE at all. As a result, it suits printers, desktops and closets where nothing draws power from the switch.
Power supplies and stacking for the Cisco Catalyst 9200
Power and stacking parts are easy to forget on a quote. However, they decide how far each switch can grow.
Choosing a power supply
The 9200 and 9200L use Config 5 power supplies. The PWR-C5-600WAC is a 600W AC unit made for 24-port models such as the C9200L-24P-4G. Meanwhile, the PWR-C5-1KWAC is a 1kW AC unit for the larger PoE budgets.
Stacking with StackWise-80
The 9200L stacks with StackWise-80, which gives 80 Gbps across up to eight members. For that, you need the C9200L-STACK-KIT, which includes two stack adapters and one 50 cm cable. Also keep every member on the same license level, because the stack requires it.
How to choose a Cisco Catalyst 9200 model
Most buyers can narrow the choice with four quick questions. So answer these before you compare prices.
- Need 10G later but not now? Then pick a C9200 and add the C9200-NM-4X when you are ready.
- Want the lowest cost per port? Then a 9200L with fixed uplinks fits well.
- Short on space? Then the compact 9200CX fits tight spots.
- Powering many access points? Then plan a second power supply for the full PoE budget.
Every switch in this list ends in -E, which means Network Essentials. For instance, the C9200L-48P-4X-E ships with Network Essentials.
Replacing the Catalyst 2960-X
The Catalyst 2960-X reached end of sale on October 31, 2022. Support ends on October 31, 2027, and Cisco names the 9200 series as the replacement. So start by matching port count and PoE needs to a 9200L or 9200 model.
Our Catalyst 9300 and campus switch guide covers the 2960-X in more detail. For the wider range, see our Cisco buyer's guide.
New vs used Cisco Catalyst 9200 switches
The 9200 family is still current, so new units give you the longest support runway. However, used switches work well for spares, branch rollouts and labs. Silverback tests used gear before it ships, so it arrives ready to configure.
You can compare both options in our guide to refurbished vs new hardware. Also ask for new or used condition on each line of your quote.
